  1. dramatic irony: the device giving the spectator an item of information that at least one of the characters in the narrative is unaware of (at least consciously), thus placing the spectator a step ahead of at least one of the characters.

  2. I am re-reading the comics now and in book 4, it opens with Lori remembering when she first made love to Shane. During her memory, they recognize that they left Rick alive. I believe in the series Lori believes Rick to be dead. In any case, Lori is not a sweetheart in either characterization!
